Day 323 – November 5

Yesterday, a friend gave us a few gigantic turnips. I’ve only ever used them in stew, which was good, but I wanted to branch out a bit. So today, I tried a turnip casserole recipe. Sounds delicious, right? he he I got the recipe from the Taste of Home blog and it’s called Scalloped Turnips. It’s sort of like macaroni and cheese, with the turnips replacing the macaroni. DH thought it was yummy. The 2 year old said, “I. Uh, I don’t like this.” The 4 year old said, “Mommy, I like the turnips!”, but her face was all bunched up as if she thought it was icky. I thought it was bitter. So, really, not a winner around here. Plus, the sauce was totally bland . .. it needed some spices and or salt. Oh well.

The other new thing I tried today: Paula Deen’s Pina Colada smoothie. I had found pineapple at Aldi’s for 99 cents and couldn’t pass up the deal. The pineapple was perfectly ripe today, so I ran out to the grocery store to buy coconut milk. They didn’t actually have coconut milk, it was cream of coconut, which had sugar and a few other things in it. In any case, I think it still worked, I just omitted the honey. The babes and DH loved it and gulped it down. Me, on the other hand, not so much. It was waaayyy too banana-y for me and it got my “this-fruit-is-way-too-sweet-and-I-might-hurl” reflex going. That’s never a good thing! I”ll skip the banana next time and use unsweetened coconut milk.
